A new whole-school framework and an 11-14 guided enquiry supporting teachers to inspire young people to ask, investigate and share scientific questions. The Great Sports Share draws on the excitement created by the Olympic Games to encourage a better understanding of how human bodies perform differently in sporting activities.

Teachers notes exemplifying progression of working scientifically. Links are made to 1851 Trust’s ‘Protect our Future’ and ‘Stem Crew’ resources, Explorify and the BBC micro:bit Playground Survey to encourage scientific question asking in real-world contexts.

Age: 5-11, 11-14 years

Curriculum topics: working scientifically, the human body including muscles

What affects our performance during sport?

In this whole-school framework, pupils ask, investigate and share questions to explore how humans perform in sporting activities.

Teachers explore progression in working scientifically from EYFS through to 14 years, with a focus on developing predictions, analysing and interpreting evidence.

Working scientifically: Ideas for questions to support all 5 enquiry types are provided.

What affects our muscle performance during sport?

In this enquiry, pupils explore why muscles become fatigued to improve understanding of aerobic and anaerobic respiration. They are challenged to explore the affect of rest on muscle performance.

Particular focus is paid to developing predictions and analysing and interpreting evidence gathered to draw conclusions.

Engage pupils in the Great Question Ponder linked to this enquiry.
