The Derby High School, Bury has been named in the BBC’s ‘The Regenerators Hall of Fame Awards’. Pupils and teachers from this school are veterans of the Great Science Share for Schools, having been involved since its inception in 2016! Now in 2022, they continue to share science in spectacular ways.

Their mission was to create a carbon-reducing strategy for their school, and to educate and involve their local community in the process. As part of the GSSfS ChangeMaker project, pupils took on a 365-day challenge to make a difference.

Part of this project was an ambition to bid for and transform a GM decommissioned school bus - which they successfully did.

The ChangeMaker space is now a community space for science, which includes state of the art solar technology and a radio station. Pupils were active leaders in the creation of this space and raised funds and support to realise their ambitions as STEM influencers.

Their experience has been topped by recognition from the BBC, who have named them climate champions and the secondary school winner in the BBC Bitesize Regenerator's Hall of Fame. This is a highly acclaimed and competitive award, that recognises the investment and vision that pupils and teachers at The Derby High School had.

Visit the BBC Bitesize website to find out more and hear direct from the pupils themselves in a short film!

We look forward to ongoing work with this school, who now share their expertise with other secondary schools across Greater Manchester through the North West Creative Comino Consortium. We can’t wait to see how they will take up the Great Science Share for School’s 2023 theme and activities to inspire young people to ask-share and investigate scientific questions.
