In Odd One Out, pupils are presented with 3 different images and have to state which is the odd one out and why. They should be encouraged to look for similarities and differences in the images, drawing on their previous experiences and knowledge.

The following resources can be used to encourage pupils to ask their own scientific questions which can lead to an investigation:

Tall trunks 5-7 year-olds

Pupils look for the similarities and differences between the three trees. Encourage them to visit local habitats and use these to inspire investigation questions.

It’s in the bag 5-7 year-olds

Focusing on materials, pupils are shown three different types of shopping bag to discuss. They could go on to design their own investigations and test different bags for strength, waterproofing and much more.

Moving propellers 7-9 year-olds

Pupils discuss the three different machines that use propellers. They could go on to create paper spinners and investigate what happens when they change their spinner in different ways.

Healthy drinks 7-9 year-olds

Spark a discussion about what a healthy drink is. Pupils may want to investigate the sugar content of different drinks.
