The Who Is…? activities introduce pupils to a range of scientists and engineers. They find out about their work and how this links to the primary curriculum.

The following resources can be used to encourage pupils to ask their own scientific questions which can lead to an investigation:

Charles MacIntosh 5-7 year-olds

Pupils are introduced to the scientist Charles Macintosh and how his investigations led to the creation of waterproof fabric. Focusing on the properties of materials, children can test a range of fabrics to find out how waterproof they are.

Maria Sibylla Merian 5-11 year-olds

Maria Sibylla Merian studied lifecycles and was one of the first people to observe, describe and record the metamorphosis of insects. Pupils can investigate butterflies and caterpillars in their school grounds or local area.

Kiara Nirghin 7-11 year-olds

In this Climate Challenge activity pupils will learn about this scientist and how she invented a biodegradable product which helps soils to retain water for longer. Pupils can learn about  super absorbent polymers whilst investigating nappies using this resource.

Alexander Fleming 9-11 year-olds

Give pupils the opportunity to learn about a scientist whose fungi discovery truly changed the world by discussing, Who is Alexander Fleming?

His story will stimulate pupils’ curiosity about mould.  They can go on to investigate microbes in different food sources.

Introduce Alexander Fleming to inspire pupils taking part in the Great Gather and Group.
